DEUCE [three]: (tennis, andy roddick)
Rated PG-13, features Andy Roddick & James Blake
Part Three
Love can be found in the most obscure places, maybe it's been right in front of your face the entire time. The story of Olivia Whitford and Andy Roddick ultimately has a happy ending but the road paved to it is anything but. Even if what you've been searching for isn't too far away, sometimes it takes a while for you to even see it.

Andy slipped on his jacket as he followed Olivia out of the bar, bracing himself for the slight yet chilly summer breeze.

"Thanks," he said as she held the door open for him. "You're such a gentleman, Liv."

"I try." Olivia glanced at her phone and made a point to groan loudly. "Andrew! It's almost midnight. Jon is going to kill me."

"At least your match is at night?" He offered, smiling slightly.

"If I lose, I'm totally blaming you. You know how Jonny is when he's pissed."

"Yeah, yeah. He's really a big softie so whatever."

Andy glanced over at his friend and grinned. He loved hanging out with Olivia, she was just so much fun. Tennis had been fortunate to him in a lot of ways, but the best part of it all was the people he met, the friendships he'd been lucky enough to forge. Liv was a prime example of that. There was just something about her, he couldn't quite figure it out but he always felt at ease when he was around her, he always felt like he could tell her anything, that his lame jokes were, well, still lame but she always laughed. (Then again, she WAS easily amused so.) She was truly unlike any girl he'd ever met before.

"Hey." Olivia nudged his shoulder against his, whistling. "You. Over there. Where the hell are you?"

"Nothing, just.. thinking."

"Yeah, I can see that." She stopped suddenly and sat down on the steps of a rather important-looking building and patted the space next to her. "Step into my office."

"I thought you had to get to bed."

"I should and if I were a smarter person, but.. I'm not. Besides, I had a nap earlier so it's not as if I'd actually get to sleep anytime soon. So spill."

Andy stuffed his hands into his jacket pockets and shook his head, sighing to himself. "Nothing. I wasn't thinking about anything, I just. I don't know." He paused, glancing at the sky, and after a few moments turned back to her, smiling softly. "It never gets old, you know."

"What?" She asked quietly.

"All of it. I mean, walking out of that tunnel onto stadium court and playing in front of your home crowd, doesn't get old. Ever. There's nothing like it, is there?"

Olivia smiled, shaking her head in agreement. "No. There really isn't."

"And even with all the horrendous losses I've had here, even with all the 'almost-maybe's-aaaah, not quite moments' I've had, I wouldn't trade the luxury of playing against the best in the world here for anything but.."

"But.. what?"

Andy chuckled slightly. "I really want it again. As awesome as it is to play here, the feeling I had holding that trophy in my arms and being able to have my name in the same sentence of the ones I grew up admiring.. it was everything, Liv. I miss it."

Olivia sighed and linked her arm through his, pushing him slightly. "Sooooo.. go get it." She said, as if it were the most obvious answer in the world. "If you want it so bad, prove it."

"Easier said than done."

"Eh. Or you can stop being all gay and wistful and quit making excuses and just do it. I refuse to believe that someone who works as hard as you can't do anything you want to but I also know that if maybe you believed in yourself half as much as everyone else does, we wouldn't be having this conversation."

Olivia stood and held out her hand. "Come on, Roddick. I have ass to kick tomorrow and you have one to put into gear so.. let's hop to it."

Andy shook his head in amusement and grabbed her hand as she pulled him to his feet. Before she could let go of him, he pulled her into a hug and wrapped his arms around her. "Thanks." He whispered into her hair.

Olivia squeezed him briefly and pulled away. "God, Roddick, I told you to stop being so gay."

Andy snorted and followed her as she began walking. See? Unlike any girl he'd ever met.

Olivia squealed a little as she half-walked, half-bounced down the hallway to her room. She felt like she was on top of the world, like she couldn't even be touched. It was utterly exhilarating and amazing and just.. it just was.

"I wonder if I tell everyone I'm related to you, if I'd get laid more often."

Olivia snorted with laughter and shook her head as she tried to come up with a response to that. "France. I do not know about you. I just.. wow."

"Oh, stop." Frances replied, stopping as they reached Liv's hotel room. "You really should be used to me by now."

"You would think, right?" Olivia said, sliding her card into the door. "But you continue to astound me."

"It's a gift."

Twenty minutes later, the sisters were perched on the bed, watching Conan and eating chips.

"I don't understand how you eat so badly and yet still look like that." Frances complained, staring at Olivia in distaste. "It's very disconcerting."

"Don't hate." Liv replied, her mouth full of Fuguns so it really sounded like 'doa sagah ate.'

Frances was prepared to start throwing chips when a knock at the door stopped her. She shook her fist and glared Olivia. "You have won. For now."

Olivia rolled her eyes. "It's probably Andy. Or James. They texted me and said they'd stop by."

"Oh, yay. My night gets even better." Frances yelled as she went to open the door.

Olivia sat up and she jumped in surprise when she heard the door slam. "Jesus, guys. Really not necessary."

Frances come back to the bed, her eyes hard and her arms crossed and breathed deeply. "I told her to get the fuck out of here and you are not talking to her so don't even try."

"What? Who was that?"

Frances paused and shrugged her shoulders as she replied. "Denise."

Olivia felt like she'd been punched in the stomach but was still slightly amused that Frances still referred to her by her given name.

"Mom," she whispered. "Mom's out there?" She asked, pointing to the door.

"Not anymore."

Olivia jumped up from the bed and walked to the door, throwing it open and stepping outside of the room so she could peer down both ends of the hallway. A few moments later, she came back into the room, and closed the door behind her, leaning back against it.

"Why did you do that, Frances?" She asked.

"Dude." Frances replied, laughing slightly. "Seriously? You actually want to talk to her or see her or have absolutely anything to do with her?!"

"Maybe! I don't know. And so what if I do, it's not your call to make."

"Someone has to remember what she did to us, what she put us through! And if it's not going to be you, I'll gladly save you the trouble!"

"Dammit, France." Olivia muttered, walking away from the door and pacing the floor in front of her bed. "Stop yelling."

"No! I will NOT stop yelling! God Liv, do you remember what she did? Do you need me to remind me you because I will, I haven't forgotten a thing!"

"And you think I have!?"

"Uh, guys. Um, China can hear you."

Olivia turned towards the voice by the door and sighed. Andy stood next to it, his eyes wide and full of surprise and confusion. "Sorry.. I just.."

"No, it's okay." Frances interjected, picking up her shoes and purse. "I should head to bed."

"No, Liv." Frances replied, her voice now much calmer and quieter. "Visit with Andy. I'll call you in the morning and walk you to practice. Awesome job tonight."

Olivia groaned slightly as she watched the door close behind Frances and picked up the remote to the TV and threw it at the wall. "Jesus!"

Andy stood with his hands in his pockets and watched the pieces of the remote fall to the floor and wondered what the hell he walked into. "So I caught your match earlier. You were great."

Olivia turned to face him and he could see the tears in her eyes and went from utterly confused to slightly panicked. "Hey." He whispered. "Hey.. what's wrong?"

"I have to get some air." She whispered, walking past him.

She didn't get far before he grabbed her slightly and pulled her back to him, wrapping her tightly in a hug. "What happened?" He asked softly.

Olivia didn't reply. Instead she wrapped her arms around his waist and pulled him closer and buried her face in his shoulder and cried.
